The history of Cheltenham, which is one of the oldest townships in all of Pennsylvania, was established as a township in Philadelphia County by fifteen English Quakers in 1683. The township evolved in its early days as a center for commerce and industry. However, it was not until March 1900 that the township established and was recognized as a first class government in the state of Pennsylvania.

Today, it is considered a typical suburban residential community. Local historians state that the Township is an architectural museum containing examples from many periods of its long history. Communities within the township include Cedarbrook, Melrose Park, La Mott, Wyncote, Cheltenham Village, and Elkins Park, http://www.montcopa.org/commerce/chelten.htm
